No doubt the Action Shot camera is trying to be this years back-to-school talk of the lunch room and an after school activity amongst friends. But should aspiring skaters and sports enthusiasts really invest in the Action Shot?
Looking at the Action Shot Camera, I can tell its trying to be a cheap alternative to the much more expensive(albeit much more professional) HD GoPro Hero. But is that necessarily a good thing in the long run? After seeing the technical aspects, it’s pretty much a standard HD camera phone just given its own separate housing. The HD display is 1280×720, SD display 640×480, and QVGA display is 320×240. It does have an autofocus feature, but one glaring thing it is missing, the absense of a zoom function. We’ve seen this with those Flip cameras, which is something I dislike greatly with these types of cameras. The reason being the lens is always set a predetermined focal length for capturing footage. This is bad in my opinion because you can’t get any closer angles of action or add an additional lens like a fisheye lens or a telescopic lens, something used in capturing sports footage by professionals. And the absence of a zoom function is mainly because the HD resolution isn’t really true HD, more sub-HD because there’s only a 5 megapixel count, so zooming into imagery would be absolutely impossible and either be obscured or blurred out.
There’s a reason why the name brand HD camcorders generally start at $400-$500 dollars, even the GoPro at around $300. They can handle the work and deliver quality results be it professional or entry amateur, and you can add lenses and additional accessories you need for filming if you are into sports and are an aspiring film maker/athlete. I could only really suggest the Action Shot if you’re not interested in professional results and you want something to basically shoot and upload, because that’s really the only function it serves. I would go with the HD model, it will get the best resolution overall and everything’s HD these days, so may as well.
The price isn’t bad for what it comes with in the box, Helmet Mount, Adhesive Mounts, Click & Grip™ Protective/Mounting Case, 2GB MicroSD Memory Card, Mini USB to USB Connector & Charger, and a Rechargeable Lithium Polymer Battery. I think the Micro SD should be an SDHC(better for capturing HD smoother), and I would suggest getting a larger size memory card. With the mounts you at least have some options to place it in different positions and areas, so can get creative with shots with the absence of a zoom function. But overall, you should know exactly what you’re getting with this when weighed against a professional camcorder/camera. The choice is yours, but in my personal and professional opinion I’d probably skip it.

I would only buy this Camera if it has a fisheye in it or if you can buy one for it. I was watching a review and it showed that the box said it comes with a Wide Angle. And as a skateboarder i would love for this to have a fisheye so i can finally make some vids and finish some videos for these people who want to sponsor me

All I can gather is that the kids who really want a GoPro for their birthday will probably get one of these first from their parents, based on its significantly lower price point. The thing I am most skeptical about is that, in the current commercial, they’re advertising it as “shoot your own awesome video!” and they have it on Cranmer’s handlebars and whatnot, but through the entire commercial, there are 2 shots that are from the actual camera. Everything else is from pro cameras. Make an entire commercial using footage from the cam (like GoPro does) to sell the quality of the footage. Again, for a high school kid wanting to mess around, this is probably great, but for anyone serious, I’d pass.

I seen an admin say that the HD model won’t be around until the holidays. Yet I find it in a section that claims it is available now.
Many people have also commented about not being able to find this yet the response is very minimal.
The optics, as others have said, basically are minimal. I am guessing a cheap digi cam with video will give the same results.
The price.. not bad considering who all endorsed it and the money I assume invested in the endorsements. lol
I feel like I am bashing this thing which I mean not to. I have only seen video from the SD model and that was OK. In the particular video it was probably plenty for the driver to review and understand afterwards. The price is cheap in comparison to GoPro BUT, again, from what I see, they are miles apart.
Also, you charge it through USB, is the battery accessible or is it deep inside like what apple bulled with the iPod? I am guessing inside.. so either a service tech or potential hacks will fix this.
Will I get one….? Maybe. I prefer GoPro but it’s worth checking out. If I think it sucks maybe a friend will appreciate it. As a geek I can only look and assume what it is… and at that I would say a better price for HD would be 79.95 but where would that put SD? Oh yeah, we passed SD up a while ago

The only problem I find with this product is the lack of aditional lenses, I know that if you put them on the camera you couldn’t use the waterproof thingy but I think its worth the shot to upgrade the product so it can use one, whenever you do so I’ll buy this thing and the lense.. think about it and just get another product on the market, I know you would earn some cash with it

I have 4 HD and i love it, but, i think, you need to create a suction cup mount for this camera, i am pretty sure this will increase sales and will meet all needs.
